Ocoee River

Our Ocoee River trip brought together 25 participants and 6 rafting outfitters for another powerful RAFT for America experience, forging connections across differences.

Participant Stories

Sherman & Shawnda

A notable pairing involved Marine veteran, lawyer, and former college football coach Sherman Neal II and Shawnda Binkley, a mother to three adult daughters, an insurance agent and soon to be a financial advisor. Sherman, a political left-leaner who identifies first as a dad. Shawnda is pro-life, pro-LGBTQ, and a “HUGE Trump supporter.” Despite their differences, Sherman and Shawnda navigated the river together and engaged in respectful, meaningful discourse, learning from one another’s perspectives as they paddled through the rapids.

Robert & Issac

Another participant, Robert Joyce, a Marine veteran and current paramedic, has rafted the Ocoee over nine times this summer. A left-leaning moderate, healthcare is a major priority for Robert, and his story struck a chord with Isaac King, an undecided moderate voter. Isaac, inspired by Robert's experience, realized the importance of researching presidential candidates' healthcare positions before making his decision.

Also in attendance were Representative Karen Lupton, a Democrat from Georgia’s District 83, Marvin Lim, a Democratic State Representative for House District 98, and Wesley Ross, a Republican, Georgia Deputy Commissioner of Legislative & External Affairs. Their participation added even more depth to the dialogue, as leaders from various political roles came together to explore how we can create a more united future.

The Ocoee trip once again showed how shared experiences on the river can break down barriers and build understanding across political divides.

In a time when America feels chaotic and divided, participants from diverse backgrounds came together for a R.A.F.T.* for America trip on the Ocoee River in Tennessee. This wasn’t just about whitewater rafting—it was about having real conversations, listening, and discovering shared values. From political moderates to those leaning left or right, everyone found common ground amidst the rapids. Nature set the stage for genuine dialogue, allowing each person to reflect, connect, and challenge their perspectives. It was a powerful reminder that while we may come from different places, we’re all navigating the same river—and we’re better when we paddle together. 🌊🤝
